The historic Office on Missing Persons (Establishment, Administration and Discharge of Functions) Bill which was passed in Parliament on Thursday will be welcomed by all people who cherish democracy, United National Party (UNP) Parliamentarian Prof.Ashu Marasinghe said. “The family members of the missing persons have a right to know what had happened to their loved ones.
That is why government decided to set-up this type of office and Office on Missing Persons (OMP) which will only be responsible to Parliament,”Prof.Marasinghe said. “Several members representing the Joint Opposition (JO) allege that the government is trying to betray the War Heroes while establishing the OMP.
But, they have forgotten that the topic of the OMP had been firstly discussed in 2009 during the rule of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa,” he explained.
“There is a view in the international society that over 60,000 Tamils had disappeared during the war which ravaged the country for over 30 years. In addition, there is a belief that around 5,100 Armed Forces personnel had gone missing during the same period, Prof.Marasinghe added.
