Former Warakapola PC chairman pleads guilty to corruption charges

 

Former Warakapola Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman and SLFP Chief Organizer to Dedigama electorate, informed the Colombo Chief Magistrate he was willing to plead guilty in four corruption cases filed by Bribery Commission, for alleged failure to declare assets and liabilities.

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption had filed four corruption cases in the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court against former PS chairman Chandana Kithsiri Wijetunga over non-declaration of assets and liabilities for a period of four years.

When the cases came up before Chief Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya, the former PS chairman was ordered released on four sureties of Rs.10, 000 each.

The four cases will be taken up again on October 28.

Bribery Commission officials told Court that according to the Assets and Liabilities Law, the Court has the jurisdiction to impose a fine of Rs.1, 000 for a person  found guilty of the charges.

The Bribery Commission alleged that former PS chairman had failed to declare his assets and liabilities for a period of four years since 2012 to 2015, while serving as the Chairman of Warakapola Pradeshiya Sabha.

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption filed charges against the former PS Chairman in the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court under Section 9 of the Declaration of Assets and Liabilities Law No.1 of 1975.
