The Gampaha Magistrate yesterday declared the shooting and killing of persons during a protest at Weliweriya demanding safe drinking water was a crime.
Gampaha Chief Magistrate Kavindya Nanayakkara concluded that two persons had died of gunshot injuries while one person had died due to an assault during the incident.
The incident took place on August 1, 2013. Three persons died and a large number of persons were injured during the incident.
The magistrate said one of the three persons had died of injuries caused to his head by a blunt weapon.
Ninety eight T56 firearms which were taken to the court custody were sent to the Government Analyst and it was revealed three of them had been used for the shooting.
