Sri Lankan women’s double pair Thilini Hendahewa and Kavidi Sirimannage defeated Indian pair in the first round to enter the pre-quarterfinal stage of the Asian Badminton Championships which is now in progress at Wuhan Sports Centre Gymnasium, China.
However, the Lankan pair lost to Taiwan in the pre-quarterfinal stage after giving a hard fight in a two-setter game.
Hendahewa and Sirimannage won in a three-setter against Indian pair P. Dandu and S. Santosh 21/13, 12/21, 21/12 but lost 21/18, 24/22 to the Taiwanese pair C.H Chang and C.T Yang.
Meanwhile, Kavidu Sirimannage lost to Japanese shuttler A. Yamaguchi in straight sets 21/7, 21/19 in the women’s singles first round game. In the men’s double event Karunaratne brothers Niluka and Dinuka had to play a tough first round with Indonesian pair W. Nayaka and A. Yusuf and lost 21/19, 21/12.
Sri Lanka’s number one mixed double pair Sachin Dias and Thilini Hendahewa also in the first round to Japanese pair K.Gondo and A. Kurihara 21/15, 21/18.
The Sri Lankan team comprises Niluka Karunaratne, Dinuka Karunaratne, Sachin Dias, Thilini Hendahewa and Kavidi Sirimannage.
This is the 39th edition of the Badminton Asian Championships and it is being hosted by the Chinese Badminton Association, with the sanction of Badminton Asia. A total of 255 shuttlers from 21 countries are taking part.
The tournament concludes on April 28.
