Clash leads to curfew in Negombo

Tensions flared in Poruthota in Negombo when a clash between two groups of three wheel drivers ensued into a full blown fight prompting police to impose a curfew within the Negombo division.

Following the tense situation police curfew was imposed in the Negombo police zone to bring the situation under control.

Police curfew was imposed in ten police divisions including Negombo, Kochchikade, Katunayake, Divulapitiya, Kotadeniyawa, Pamunugama, Raddolugama, Seeduwa, Dungalpitiya and Katana. The curfew which was imposed around 8.30 pm last evening is to remain in effect until 7 am today.

With the imposing of curfew and the security measures, police and the security personnel could bring the area under control.

Special Task Forces (STF) and army infantry were called in to quell the tension. A bystander told the Daily News that an argument erupted when two groups of three wheeler drivers clashed with each other.

Negombo has been one of the worst devastated areas after a deadly suicide attack at the St. Sebastian’s church in Katuwapitiya. Residents say tensions have been simmering for a while in the area.
