Gamini Senarath to make a dock statement today

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s Chief of Staff Gamini Sedara Senarath is to make a dock statement today (14) regarding a case filed against him and several others over alleged financial misappropriation case. When the case came up before the Trial-at-Bar bench comprising High Court Judges Sampath Abeykoon (President), Sampath Wijeratne and Champa Janaki Rajaratne, former Treasury Secretary P. B. Jayasundara who had been named as a defence witness concluded giving evidence before Colombo Permanent High Court-at-Bar.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundara was represented by a representative of the Police Department. Defence counsel informed court that his client Gamini Senarath would make a dock statement today to support defence evidence.

The prosecution evidence pertaining to the case filed against four accused for illegally transferring Rs.500 million from Litro Gas to Canwill Holdings Pvt Limited was concluded on February 12.

On a previous occasion, the court ordered the acquittal and release of the third accused, former Samurdhi Commissioner Neil Bandara Hapuwinna from the case, owing to lack of evidence against him during the prosecution’s evidence.

However, the Permanent High Court-at-Bar decided to proceed with further trial against former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s Chief of Staff Gamini Sedara Senarath, former Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation Managing Director Piyadasa Kudabalage and Lasantha Bandara. The accused have been charged under the Penal Code, the Prevention of Money Laundering Act and the Public Property Act.

The Attorney General alleged that the accused committed this offence between February 1, 2014, and January 20, 2015.

Deputy Solicitor General Thusith Mudalige appeared for the Attorney General. President’s Counsel Gamini Marapana, Anil Silva, PC, Ali Sabr,y PC and Senior Counsel Navin Marapana and Nalinda Indatissa appeared for the defence.
