The tusker, Wasana, of the Kataragama Devalaya that carries the relics in the Kataragama Esala Perahera was untied symbolically from the tree it was tied in a ceremony amidst a large number of devotees, the Maha Sangha, Kapumahatmayas and Acting Basnayaka Nilame Dilruwan Rajapaksa.
The Acting Basnayaka Nilame said the tusker was born in Anuradhapura and it is 50 years of age. Its tusks are two and a half feet long. He said it was the biggest elephant among the tamed. It was donated to the Kataragama Devalaya by the late Wimala Kannangara.
