A program to uplift bee honey production

The Ministry of primary industries and social empowerment ministry have began a program to increase the bee honey production in the country.

Referring to the program minister Daya Gamage told daily news that training, production and marketing in the bee honey industry have been already in progress in Sinharaja, Ritigala, Dambulla, Anuradhapura,Matale, Ampara and Polonnaruwa areas.

He pointed out that although large scale bee honey production is being promoted in several countries such as China, India, Argentina, New Zealand etc, since pesticides at large used in processing the bee honey production, quality is not high as found in the natural bee honey.

The primary industries ministry is determined to implement the program using new technology giving priority for maintaining the natural taste.

It is revealed that the Sri Lanka's annual bee honey production is limited to 25 metric tons whereas 150 metric tons or more being imported annually to fulfill the local requirements. Under the ministry's bee honey production promotion program in selected districts.

"We have planned to promote the local bee honey industry as a large exporting enterprise. As an initiative quality bee honey being branded as Sinharaja, Ritigala, Dambulu bee honey are marketed at present. We get the assistance of agriculture, finance, women affairs ministries in this venture” Daya Gamage emphasized further.
