The Archdiocese of Colombo confirmed that the letter being circulated in social media bearing the signature of his Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith and dated October 31 was fake. The GMOA, an organisation that has been known to oppose the MCC agreement, shared this fake letter on its official Facebook page.
Meanwhile, Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera, reacting on Twitter to the GMOA’s post bearing the fake letter, stated that “the sinister campaign by Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s camp had been exposed”.
“Desperate Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Co., trying to stifle yet another victory for Sri Lanka, resorted to forging church statements against the MCC grant. The anti-US hysteria by the ‘ugly American’ is not only laughable, but also deeply irresponsible,” Samaraweera commented in his Twitter account.
