FCID brought under CID now

The Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID), which was established under highly controversial circumstances, has been reportedly brought under the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

It was reported that the FCID had been established in violation of the Police Ordinance and this unit had been used by the previous government solely for political revenge.

The Financial Crime Investigation Division which was located in Colombo 03, shifted to the Central Point Building on Chatham Street, Colombo 1, on November 27, 2015, headed by Senior DIG Ravi Waidyalankara.

Recently, Waidyalankara levelled allegations against the previous government that the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) could not function independently as expected due to pressure from the then government.

He claimed that he was pressured by a high ranking members of the previous regime to target the Rajapaksas. Hence, he said the FCID could not be successful as it was not allowed to function independently.

Waidyalankara said the FCID only investigated the complaints referred by the Anti-Corruption Committee and investigations were only focused on a specific group of persons, adding that most of the serious complaints received by the FCID were against the Rajapaksas.
