University readmission for students subjected to ragging

The Government plans to implement a special procedure to readmit the students those who abandoned their higher studies due to ragging by the senior students in state universities and the other government-owned degree-awarding institutions, Co-Cabinet Media Spokesman and Information & Communications Technology, Higher Education, Technology & Innovations Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardane said.

“The National Police Commission had said that during the past ten years nearly 2000 students who had entered universities had left them due to ragging by the senior students.” said the Minister.

Addressing the weekly Cabinet media briefing held at the Government Information Department yesterday, Minister Dr. Gunawardane said that a Committee comprising university dons, professors and other intellectuals will be appointed through the University Grants Commission within the next few weeks to probe the victims of ragging.

“A Cabinet Paper is also scheduled to be submitted seeking the approval of the Cabinet of Ministers to readmit those students who were subjected to sitting for a test even by bringing amendments to the Acts,” the Minister said.
