With Covid-19 taking the upperhand and virtually bringing sport activities to a halt over the world sports personalities have been forced to self-isolate and quarantine themselves at home.
The ‘Daily News’ spoke to a few Sri Lankan sportsmen who shared their experiences of how they were coping with the situation.
Former Sri Lanka rugby captain and parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa has initiated a home gardening challenge awareness via twitter and requested citizens of Sri Lankan to continue and join the program.
Namal said that the initiative was launched to promote a more sustainable and self-sufficient future where the people are not defined by circumstances beyond their control.
He further stated: “I do exercises everyday to a busy schedule not getting more time to involve in yoga and exercise but spend a lot of time for workouts. I also got an opportunity to reading books. Apart from that we have distributed essential goods for the needy people as much possible.”
CH and FC and former Sri Lanka rugby player Rohitha Rajapaksa said, “Covid-19 should not be taken lightly, yes we are sportsmen and we hate being stuck at home doing nothing. But we must make the sacrifice to safe guard our loved ones and everyone around us.
He further said: “We do miss playing the season and it ended up partially, but we hope we can recover from this and start afresh hopefully with the Sevens at least by November. At least we get time to spend with our loved ones at home and that should be taken as a blessing. We should use this to bond and keep the relationships strong.”
“Take the maximum and try and help one another, check up on your neighbors and try to donate at least a meal to the needy and stray animals that come by your neighborhood. Keep safe and stay strong,” he said.
Former Sri Lanka football captain Sujan Perera who is currently playing domestic football in the Maldives also shared his views and said, “Maldives is also under lock down four days before I was due to leave and I am stuck here. My wife and daughter are in Sri Lanka and they are safe. Compared with other countries Sri Lanka are better in their precautions thanks to our medical staff and tri-forces commitments.”
South Asian Gold medalist in Nepal, sprinter Aruna Dharshana said: “I continue my work outs and trainings at my home and I got some precious time to spend with my family. Hopefully we will overcome this crisis within the next few weeks. I request all our sports personalities that even after the curfew is lifted we should continue the social distancing and take precautions to avoid the virus raising its head again in the future.”
