Development projects at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), which were postponed for the past three months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, have resumed.

Industrial Export, Investment Promotion, Tourism and Aviation Minister Prasanna Ranatunga has advised contractors to expedite the construction work.

He said so during a recent inspection tour at the said construction sites. The minister said the project was to commence in 2014, but was stalled by the previous government. “After the government changed, however, the decision was taken to go ahead with the project, which the country is in dire need of,” he added. Several development activities carried out with financial assistance from Japan are, at present, being implemented.

These projects consist of; the construction of new multilevel terminal building, Pier No. 2 and Pier No. 3 with a link concourse, a new airport apron and taxiways, elevated access roads, a multistory car park, and public utilities.

It has been revealed that the completion dates of several construction projects have already been passed. Ranatunga said the completion of these projects in 2023 would help fly in more tourists, and also ensure that everything runs smoothly, without any delays.
