Schools to re-open for students from July 6

* June 29 to July 3 used to clean, disinfect premises
* Advanced Level exam from September 7 to October 2
* Grades 10, 12 to begin on July 20
* Grade 5 scholarship exam on September 13


All Government Schools will re-open in four stages from June 29, after being closed due to COVID-19 pandemic, Education Minister Dullas Alahapperuma announced yesterday.

The Government decided to close schools on March 13 following the COVID -19 outbreak, Minister Alahapperuma told a press conference held at the Education Ministry, that schools will reopen for teachers, principals and non-teaching staff on June 29.

“The period from June 29 to July 3 should be used to clean and disinfect school premises and prepare for academic and other activities” he said.

In the second stage schools will be reopened for students in grades 13, 11 and five from July 6 onwards.

Under the third stage, schools will open for students in grade 10 and 12 from July 20 onwards.

The fourth stage will see the resumption of academic activities for students in grades three to nine beginning from July 27.

However, no decision has been taken to reopen schools for Grade One and Two students.

Meanwhile, the minister said the Advanced Level examination will be held from September 7 to October 2 while the Grade 5 scholarship examination will be held on September 13.

The minister said the decision to open schools had been taken following on the guidelines of health authorities and on the advice of the President and Prime Minister.

The minister said Sri Lanka also becomes the first country in the region to control COVID-19 in an effective manner in a short period of time and reopen schools.

The minister said his officials will hold talks with transport authorities in the coming days to prepare a mechanism to provide safe transport for the schoolchildren.

All government schools will reopen under four stages, said the Education Minister during a media briefing held at the Education Ministry this afternoon

1st stage : Teachers and principals will return to schools on June 29.

2nd Stage: Schools will be reopened for students in Grade 13, 11 and 5 on July 6.

3rd Stage:  Resumption of academic activities of students in Grade 10 and 12 on July 20.

4th Stage: Schools will reopen for students in Grade 3,4,6,7,8 and 9 on July 27.
