Mattala Airport, which has been inactive for nearly five years, has been reactivated with the coming to power of the present government.
During the spread of the coronavirus around the world, a number of operations were carried out at the Mattala Airport to bring back Sri Lankans trapped in various countries.
A total of 20 flights including SriLankan Airlines, IndiGo's ATR 72, A-320 aircraft and a number of other foreign airlines arrived at the Mattala Mahinda Rajapaksa International Airport during this period.
In addition, Mattala Airport has been able to make an active contribution to Sri Lankan aviation operations, providing a great service as a base for the transfer of crew members and facilities for cargo aircraft for various foreign ships calling at Sri Lankan ports, the airport manager said.
With the reopening of airports that were temporarily closed due to the Corona situation, the government is considering launching several direct flights to foreign countries from Mattala Rajapaksa Airport, the manager said.
