The Colombo Football Club struck a crushing 3-0 defeat on Police SC in their quarter-final game of the ongoing Vantage FFSL President’s Cup Soccer Tournament played at the Sugathadasa Stadium, last evening.
It was an interesting game for spectators numbering to over 500 who were present to witness a game of classy football after a lapse of five months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They were able to witness one of the best games played so far during this Championship.
Colombo FC got off to a flying start from the get-go and went on the attack to get off to the most needed lead. They had five attempts during the first fifteen minutes, but failed to fire a shot on target.
Their attacking style was effective as the law enforcers had gone on the defense rather than going on the attack to score. This attacking system gave the Police Defense line a torrid time in halting goal-hungry Colombo FC strikers.
Police Forwards could not match the Fine passing game of the Colombo FC, however, the failure of the Colombo FC to score the teams returned for lemons with a blank scorecard.
During the second leg of the game, Colombo FC maintained their super passing game and put more pressure on the Police Defenders. However, former Sri Lanka skipper M.N.M. Fazal received a good pass from the right wing and no mistake with his attempt to get the team’s first goal in the 15th-minute mark of the second half to put his side on the front.
There onwards Police SC changed their playing tactics and went on the attack to find the equalizer for a further 22 minutes, but their attempts were foiled when A.R. Ahamed found the net to add the second goal for Colombo FC 2-0. This became a tough task for Police SC but continued their attacking method expecting at least a consolation goal. Their attempts too were thwarted by Colombo FC defenders and the Goal Keeper M Nazeer Imran who as very attentive between the posts did an excellent for his side.
Two minutes away from the final whistle, Shabeer Razooniya made the scoreline for Colombo SC 3-0 to make it a memorable victory for his team.
Police Goal Keeper D. Mahendran Dinesh had to get the attention of their Physio on three occasions and had to leave the field bringing in the reserve goalkeeper to do the services for the team. With this, the Police had to make two changes while Colombo FC made three changes during the second session. Colombo FC’s B.M.C.B. Ratnayake and Y.S.J. Furic Momas and Polic’s G.A.J. Danusha Perea were warned by Referee K.K.T. Sameera.
