Two arrested for promoting extremism, terrorism

The Terrorism Investigation Department (TID) yesterday have arrested two individuals for allegedly promoting extremist ideologies in the country and collecting funds for terrorist activities. Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said the 46-year-old had been deported from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on December 05 last year and he had been engaged in collecting funds for terrorist activities. Meanwhile, the other 49-year-old suspect was arrested at Kattankudy in Batticaloa and he was identified as a keen follower of Zahran Hashim,the mastermind of Easter Sunday terror attacks. The suspect had promoted Wahhabism and extremist ideologies through Facebook, said the Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana. Further investigations are being conducted by the TID regarding both suspects.

The Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) has arrested two individuals from Matale and Kattankudy on the charge of inciting groups to spread extremist and racist views in the country, Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said.

“Among the two suspects, a resident of Kattankudy, has been identified as a close associate of Zahran Hashim, the main perpetrator of the Easter Sunday terror attacks and has been linked to his extremist activities,” he said.

DIG Ajith Rohana told a media briefing that the 46-year-old from Matale had been deported from the United Arab Emirates on December 5 last year for engaging in extremist activities.

It has been revealed that the suspect had collected money while in the UAE to fund extremist activities and disseminated extremist ideologies through the Internet to those residing in Sri Lanka.

The Terrorist Investigation Division has revealed that the suspect had collected donations from Sri Lankans working in the United Arab Emirates for his cause. Both have been detained and questioned under the provisions of the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).
