Education Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris has informed Teachers’ Unions that a Cabinet Paper to eliminate teacher salary anomalies is being prepared and this will be submitted to the Cabinet next Monday.
Accordingly, the representatives of the Teachers’ Unions are scheduled to hold another discussion with the Minister on Tuesday at 11.00 a.m. regarding the contents of this Cabinet Paper.
The Education Minister has informed of this development over the phone while the representatives of the teachers’ unions were at a discussion with officials at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday. The General Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers’ Service Union Mahinda Jayasinghe said yesterday that the teachers will get an opportunity to hold a discussion with President Gotabaya Rajapaksa shortly.
The Education Minister, Finance Ministry and Education Ministry officials and the Salaries Commission members will also participate in the discussion.
The Ceylon Teachers’ Service Union General Secretary lamented that even after one and a half years since handing over a letter to the Presidential Secretariat on February 14, 2020, demanding the elimination of salary anomalies and other issues, a reply has not been received yet.
“That is why the teachers had to protest in front of the Presidential Secretariat yesterday,” (22), he said. However, he added that the decision to stay away from online teaching by teachers will continue until the demands are met.
A protest was held in front of the Fort Railway Station yesterday morning with the participation of 30 teachers and principals’ unions demanding the elimination of their salary anomalies and solutions to several other issues including the repeal of the Kotelawala Defence University Act and the provision of online education facilities to all students. At the end of the protest, the group walked to the Presidential Secretariat.
