The Environment Ministry is formulating a National Environmental Policy for the first time to protect the environment in the country. There was no such a national policy for environmental protection until now, the Ministry said in a press release.
The Policy is being formulated by the Ministry Project Division.
Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera had instructed to formulate a National Environmental Policy that will not change as the policies of certain ministries change when Governments and Ministers change, Ministry Secretary Dr. Anil Jasinghe said.
He said that Parliamentarians, NGOs and environmental organisations interested in the environment, environmentalists and environmental journalists and other experts will be consulted in this regard.
The Policy is to be finalised before the end of this year.
“If we formulate a National Environmental Policy on the views of all, then no one can oppose that policy. Many allege that there is an environmental damage in obtaining the necessary resources for national development projects and in the implementation of development projects. Therefore, it is our responsibility to implement development projects in a manner that does not harm the ecosystems and to plan for the future by managing the limited resources in obtaining the necessary natural resources,” the Minister said.
The Minister was conducting a Progress Review Meeting of the “Surakimu Ganga” (Let’s protect rivers) Project at the Ministry on Monday (23) on Zoom.
