An awareness programme on AIDS for the people of Kegalle District was held on Wednesday (01) to coincide with the World AIDS Day under the patronage of Sabaragamuwa Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa.
The World AIDS Day falls on December 1 each year. This time the theme was, "Let's Eliminate Inequality and End AIDS".
Awareness programmes for the AIDS Day are being carried out around the world every year on December 1 since 1988. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) statistics, AIDS has killed 36 million people worldwide and there are already 38 million people living with AIDS worldwide.
In Sri Lanka, 439 AIDS cases have been identified in 2019 and 363 cases in 2020, delivering a special lecture on AIDS Dr. Shyama Somawardena said.
The winners of the AIDS Eradication Essay Competition, which organised by the Kegalle District STD Prevention Institute among schoolchildren in the District were also presented with certificates of merit and financial assistance.
Devmini Rajakaruna of the Swarna Jayanthi National School, Kegalle won the first place in the Junior Category, Hasindi Karunasinghe of the same college won the Second and Samindita Jayawardena of the St. Joseph's College, Kegalle won the third place. Hasini Kaviraksha of the St. Joseph's College won the First Place in the Senior Category, Sansala Dissanayake of the same college won the Second Place and Vishmika Jayasuriya of Walagama Maha Vidyalaya won the Third Place.
Dr. Asela Perera, Director of Health Services, Kegalle, Dr. Mihiri Priyangani, Medical Superintendent of the Kegalle District General Hospital and Dr. Nilanga Jayasinghe, Head of the Kegalle District STD Control Institute were also present at the occasion.
