The Geetanjali Amarasuriya Visakha Centenary Library was opened by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa recently with the financial assistance of Rs. 96.5 million from the School Development Society and the Ministry of Education.
Sandamali Aviruppola, Principal of Visakha Vidyalaya and Visakha Head Prefect welcomed the guests. The Prime Minister then unveiled a plaque commemorating the opening of the new library. After cutting the ribbon and entering the first floor, the Prime Minister inaugurated the library and handed over the first book to a Visakha student. The Principal of Visakha Vidyalaya presented a memento to Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The Geetanjali Amarasuriya Memorial Library, which was inaugurated on August 20, 1967, is a four storey building with an area of nearly 15,000 square feet. The School Development Society and the Ministry of Education have made efforts to present the new library to Visakha girls, overcoming the difficulties encountered during the Covid 19 epidemic.
Prof. GL Peiris, Minister of External Affairs, Kithsiri Liyanagamage, Director, National Schools, Sandamali Aviruppola, Principal, Visakha Vidyalaya, Deputy Principals of Visakha Vidyalaya, staff and Visakha past pupils, former Principal School Development society members and well wishers were present.
