Anuradhapura Divisional Crimes Investigation Unit officers have arrested a Police Constable and another suspect for engaging in heroin smuggling using the easy cash money transaction method on Sunday. Five mobile phones have also been taken into custody by the Police.
The 32-year-old Police Constable is attached to the Anuradhapura Divisional Traffic Division.
Police have raided his residence at Airport Road, Anuradhapura and recovered 16 grams and 200 milligrams of heroin.
It has been revealed that this Police Officer had been working at the Bambalapitiya Police Station earlier and there he has had some close contacts with a large-scale heroin smuggler. The latter is a 29-year-old resident of the Wellawatta area and he is the other suspect arrested with the Police Constable.
This heroin smuggler had been engaging in his business from this Police Constable’s residence after being released from the prison. The suspects were to be produced before the Courts.
OIC of the Divisional Crimes Investigation Unit CI Wijekoon Bandara, SI Sisira Kumara, Police Sergeant Bandara and Police Constable Jayasinghe conducted the raid.
