Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Chamal Rajapaksa told Parliament yesterday that when engaging in politics, one should also learn to let go at the right time without being blinded by politics and hanging onto positions out of greed for power.
Joining the debate in parliament yesterday over the May 9 spate in violence throughout the country, he said that the protesters from Temple Trees should never have been allowed to reach Galle Face. He said that it was the responsibility of the IGP and the Defence Secretary to ensure that peace and security prevailed in the country. “I don’t know who gave the orders for the police not to intervene and stop these protesters from reaching Galle Face. Who gave the orders to the IGP? Why didn’t the Defence Secretary and the IGP take steps to prevent this carnage? These are question that answers should be found. All this violence started when the peaceful protesters were attacked. This is as a result of wrong advice.”
Chamal Rajapaksa, the older brother of former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa also said that if would have been best if Mahinda Rajapaksa had stepped down from politics gracefully after his two terms as President. “Had he done that he would not have had to face this dejection today. In politics, you must also learn to let go at the right time. If one fails to do so, it is inevitable that you would have to face this situation someday. Mahinda Rajapaksa has done a great service and has made many sacrifices during his 50 years in politics. Even my father pawned his properties to serve the people. That is why the Rajapaksas’ are still accepted by the people.”
