Cultivate other crops, says Minister Amaraweera

Co-Cabinet Spokesman, Agriculture and Wildlife Minister Mahinda Amaraweera yesterday said that those who have abandoned paddy fields should be prepared to cultivate other crops.

Speaking at the weekly Cabinet media briefing at the Government Information Department, the Minister stated that those who have abandoned paddy fields can cultivate green gram, black gram, soya bean, udu, maize etc.

It can be said with certainty that the government will buy these crops at a very high price without allowing the farmers to bear the loss if the prices of these crops fall in any way. The Minister also stated that activities are being carried out.

On this occasion, the Minister urged the farmers to cultivate Kurakkan or any other type of crop, especially if they are cultivating imported crops, they should not be afraid and they have a guaranteed price and if they cultivate export products they can get a good price.

He said that the necessary steps would be taken in the future to encourage farmer to produce onions, potatoes and groundnuts locally.
