Navy nabs two suspects with Kerala cannabis worth over Rs. 105 mn

Two separate operations mounted by the Navy in Kilinochchi, Jaffna and Allappiddi, Kayts, on Friday (3), led to the seizure of over 350kg of Kerala cannabis and the apprehension of two suspects with a car.

In an operation carried out by SLNS Kanchadewa, Welusumana and Uththara in the Northern Naval Command in coordination with the STF, about 141kg and 605g of Kerala cannabis, hidden in a house in Allappiddi on Kayts island, was seized and a suspect arrested on Friday. The narcotics were found in 59 packages which were stuffed in four sacks.

Meanwhile, the Naval Detachment in Vetthilakeni in the same naval command, with the STF mounted another special operation in Vivekananda Nagar in Kilinochchi on Friday evening and recovered about 208kg and 545g of Kerala cannabis, after searching a house in the area. The stock of Kerala cannabis was in 91 packages which were contained in five sacks. Troops also nabbed a suspect in connection with the incident and took into custody a car made ready to transfer the Kerala cannabis.

The gross street value of Kerala cannabis held in these operations is believed to be over Rs.105 million. The suspects taken into custody are residents of Allappiddi and Mullaitivu, aged 43 and 46.

The stock of Kerala cannabis with the suspect held in Allappiddi was handed over to the Kayts Police for onward legal action. Meanwhile the haul of Kerala cannabis along with the accused and the car held in Vivekananda Nagar in Kilinochchi was handed over to Kilinochchi Police STF for onward legal action.
