Environment Minister Hafiz Naseer Ahamed said yesterday that he is for the Executive Presidency and he opposes any form of dilution of powers of the President, in the interests of the people.
Minister Ahamed was speaking to the Daily News on Sunday while fresh moves are being made to reduce the powers of the Executive President under the Constitution.
Ahamed said that he was also speaking to the press as Deputy Leader of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) and insisted that the Executive President who is elected by the people at a Presidential Election should possess powers to overcome bureaucracy and help expedite the implementation of important matters for the greater good of the nation.
“The Executive President who is elected by the people of the entire country holds a position of responsibility to the people as a whole and he does not represent only one region,” Ahamed said, stressing that the Executive Presidency should be in Sri Lanka and he opposes the abolition of executive powers that position currently holds.
SLMC Deputy Leader Ahamed is the only Member of Parliament who successfully contested under the symbol ‘Tree’ from the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress.
