Plans to produce 275 Mws of wind power from Mannar area - CEB Chairman

Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) Chairman M.M.C. Fernando said that moves are under way to produce 275 Megawatts of wind power from the Mannar area by 2023.

Fernando said wind power generation will be carried out mainly by Adani Group of Company of India. Besides, other investors will be joined to the project as it has been planned to offer a 25 Megawatt portion to each for those investors.

When he was asked whether the CEB is going to purchase a power unit generated by Adani for US$ 0.7 each, he said that there is no truth in that. The purchasing price is decided by a Committee in which several parameters are concerned.

In accordance with the CEB act, power should be purchased at the least price, he said.

He said that it is needed to generate at least 500 Megawatts of power from renewable energy.

He said in order to achieve the 70 percent renewable energy target by 2030, infrastructure facilities in the energy sector should be developed.

“According to estimates, around Rs.3 billion will be needed for infrastructure developments. A task is needed to achieve the targets of this national program,” he added. Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority Chairman Ranjith Sepala said that the power requirement by 2030 will be 8,000 Megawatts. Therefore, attention should be drawn on increasing power generation drastically while paying more attention to renewable energy.
