World Bank to provide US$ 105 mn for country’s Urea for Maha Season

The World Bank has agreed to provide a financial Assistance of US$ 105 million to provide the full Urea fertilizer requirement for paddy cultivation during the 2022 Maha Season, Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said.

 The Minister was addressing Research Officers and Agriculture Officials at the Ambalantota Divisional Secretariat to launch the ‘Api Wawamu - Rata Dinawamu’ Cultivation War in the Hambantota District.

The Minister further said that in the last quarter of 2021, he announced that there would be a food shortage in our country. “Although I was the then Environment Minister, I even submitted a Cabinet paper calling for the immediate launch of a cultivation war program to combat famine”. He said the President even appointed a Special Committee consisting of Ministers from 17 Ministries. “Every sector says that our country will have to face the famine I mentioned then in the near future.

Therefore, we as the Agriculture Ministry are launching a countrywide ‘Waga Sangrama’ programme.We are working to encourage farmers to cultivate all uncultivated land”.
