Sena Vidanagama passes away

Veteran photojournalist Sena Vidanagama passed away yesterday. Vidanagama, 76, was a senior photojournalist at Lake House and later at Agence France Presse (AFP).

Born in 1945 at Kapugama, Matara, Vidanagama joined the Lake House Photography Department in 1979.

One of his iconic photographs was of a Sri Lankan sailor attacking visiting Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi during a Guard of Honour in 1987, when he (Vidanagama) was staff photographer attached to the Daily News.

Later he became the Sri Lankan photographer for AFP. He was elected President of the Sri Lanka Photojournalists’Association in 1995 and later served as the Association’s Treasurer.

During his 26-year career as a photojournalist, he received numerous awards and honours, including the once-in-a-lifetime Distinguished Service Award for outstanding service and commitment to journalism.

His remains lie at his residence at 571, Nidahas Mawatha, Hettiyawatte, Elapitiwala, Ragama, and the funeral will take place today at 6.00 pm at Welisara General Cemetery.
