''The Government employees are finding it very difficult to support their families with their salaries.
The economy in the country has broken down and has been downgraded as never happened in the history, Anuradhapura Government Agent Janaka Jayasundara said.
He was participating at a workshop on Home Gardening to be set up at domestic and office level by Government employees to cushion the impact of the growing Cost of Living and supplementing day-to-day nutritious dietary requirements.
The programme was held at the Anuradhapura Kachcheri Auditorium. Anuradhapura District Agriculture Director H.L. Thenuwara said that the country will be most probably in the forefront of imminent world food scarcity before long. At present 12 per cent of paddy, 80 per cent of Soya, 25 per cent of cowpee and green gram and 50 per cent of ginger production in the country is provided from the Anuradhapura District. As such, the population in the Anuradhapura District will not be badly affected on the face of a food scarcity.
However, Government employees should give priority for scientific home gardening for gaining and maintaining vital food security. Also, home gardening will be a sustainable remedy for malnutrition among schoolchildren.
It is planned to conduct several home gardening training programmes for Government employees at D.S. Division level by the Agriculture Department in collaboration with the inter-provincial agriculture authorities, he said. It was further disclosed at the workshop that at present the maze cultivation in the country has been a failure increasing the prices of eggs and chicken. As such, it is highly advisable to grow Dambala, Soya, Cowpee at home gardening level to supplement the protein requirements.
Anuradhapura Additional Government Agents Vijaya Wanasinghe and Sandya Abeysekara, District Samurdhi Director W.A. Wasantha, Kachecheri Chief Accountant U.S. Aruna Ravi and a large number of Kachcheri staff were present.
