Applications called for OIC appointments

Applications have been called for the appointment of Officer in Charge (OIC) positions. Speaking to the Daily News, Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said that applications had been called and appointments would be made to Police stations where persons not qualified for such positions are currently in service.

Public Security Minister Tiran Alles upon assuming duties had instructed that OICs be appointed in a systematic manner.

The new Minister had instructed the IGP to call for applications for every Police station and make public a point system based on the most suitable applicants to fill the post.

It was reported that accordingly, the Chief Inspectors of Police (CIs) who are currently serving as OICs as well as other Chief Inspectors of Police have been instructed by the Police Headquarters to submit new applications.

The OICs were appointed in 2021 on the recommendation of the ruling party MPs and Ministers in the relevant Police areas. It has now been revealed that 126 such OICs who were appointed from 1st January to 3rd November 2021 were those who did not possess the required qualifications and they had been appointed without even having to face an interview.

This was revealed by a letter sent to the Secretary of the Public Security Ministry by the IGP.

In his letter the IGP had stated that there was pressure exerted by the politicians to appoint their recommended persons as OICs of their relevant areas.
