Several vegetable growers in the Madahapola village in the Ibbagamuwa DS division said they were using organic fertilizer as instructed by the Agricultural Research Assistant in the area and they have reaped a high yield.
R.M. Punchibanda, a vegetable grower, said that he had used only organic fertilizer for pumpkin cultivation and he reaped a bumper harvest.
“I took a keen interest in the government policy of encouraging bio-agriculture and used organic fertilizer as instructed by the Agricultural Instructors. In fact, I did not use chemical fertilizer or liquids for my crops. I am hopeful that it would bring a high yield. He further said that there are some 15 kidney patients in the village. Most of them are farmers. Now they have realized the harmful effects of using chemical fertilizer. Another farmer in Madahapola S.G. Senarath said that he was a livestock farmer and that he used only cow dung for vegetable cultivation. He said he cultivated tomatoes, ladies finger and chillies successfully depending on organic fertilizer including cow dung.
