Promising Githmi Fernando of Ave Maria Convent, Negombo clinched the Girls’ Under-14 Singles title at the 107th Colombo Open Tennis Championships, which continued at the SLTA Courts in Green Path, Colombo yesterday.
The bottom seed produced another stunning performance and went on to topple the more fancied and the top seed Gehansa Methnadi 6-1, 6-3 in a rousing final encounter.
Githmi made her intentions quite clear from the start and dominated the first set and went on to add the finishing touches in style despite a late rally from her opponent.
This victory will also be a psychological boost for Githmi who is set to play the same opponent in the Girls’ Under-16 semi-finals later.

Boys’ Under-14 Singles (semi-finals): Saha Kapilasena beat Tyee Kapilasena 4-6, 6-3, 10-8, Ganuka Fernando beat Lithum Lomika Jayabandu 6-3, 6-4.
