Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardena addressing a media briefing at the Government Information Department yesterday (21) said that the Government is focusing on introducing a special interest free loan scheme for Sri Lankans working in foreign countries and earning foreign exchange for the country. Manusha Nanayakkara, Minister of Labour and Foreign Employment have proposed the loan scheme.
Overseas Sri Lankans are eligible for the loan scheme by depositing a minimum of US$ 600 per month in any commercial bank. After depositing US$ 600 in the name of the expatriate worker, the family of the expatriate worker has the opportunity to obtain a loan of five times that amount. It is proposed to provide this loan on an interest free basis for a period of five years.
