Sri Lanka has lost a US$ 50 million project intended to provide relief to farmers due to the inefficiency of a senior official dealing with foreign-funded projects in the Agriculture Ministry, a senior Ministry official said.
Last year (2021) the country lost the Inclusive Connectivity and Development Project (ICDP) or the Interconnected and Development Project.
Representatives of farmers’ organizations point out that due to the non-implementation of this project by March this year, the project was cancelled.
Due to this they point out that the opportunity to provide the necessary infrastructure for the farming activities of the low income farmers in the country was lost.
The Smallholder Agri Business and Resilience Project (SARP), a US$ 82 million project, which was awarded to the Foreign Funds Project Division of the Agriculture Ministry last year, is still not properly operational.
Representatives of farmers’ organizations point out that although the project is not in progress, a director has been appointed.
