Parliamentarian Nimal Piyatissa has requested Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera to look into the possibility of setting up fuel stations which will sell fuel only for US Dollars or other accepted foreign currencies.
He has called for the opening of petrol stations in every district where foreign currency can be traded for fuel, adding that this will enable the government to unearth hidden dollars or other foreign currencies at a time the country reserves have taken a record dip.
The MP has also informed the Minister in writing that if the programme of allocating petrol stations which issue fuel only in foreign currency is successful, a considerable amount of foreign currency can be found.
If the system is set up, foreign tourists visiting the country as well as those earning dollars by exports to foreign countries will use the dollars they have, the MP said in the request.
