Sri Lanka Tourism should market its unique scenery and facilities to the Indian film industry in a more aggressive manner, said CEO Inspiredge, business development consultancy Sumit Bothra.
An international relations specialist, Bothra said that it’s a waste to market Sri Lanka among the top Bollywood film makers as they are approached from all over the world with a host of concessions. “What Sri Lanka should do is tap into the Tamil and other language based filmmakers.”
The Cinema of South India is used to refer collectively to the six distinct film industries of the Southern region of India - Tulu cinema, Konkani cinema, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada film industries – as a single entity. They are based in Mangalore, Bangalore, Goa, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kochi and Bengaluru respectively. The combined revenue of Tamil and Telugu film industries represent nearly 40% of the total revenue of Indian cinema. “This is the market Sri Lanka tourism should look at.”
He said that while he was in Sri Lanka last month he forwarded this proposal to the new Secretary Ministry of Tourism and Lands Chulananda Perera who promised to take this forward.
Bothra also said that despite the current economic crises in Sri Lanka India Sri Lanka flights are operating almost in its pre C-19 schedule and this is a plus point to promote Indian tourism. Sri Lanka’s entertainment industry too is progressing almost normally and this is another area that needs to be looked at more closely. “usually it’s the ‘man’ who visits Sri Lanka to patronize the Casinos which are still open 24/7 and promotions should be made to attract his family as well and give them an outstation tour while the husband is patronizing the casino.”
This idea should also be discussed by Sri Lanka Tourism more closely with the four local cassino operators as well.
