The Government will develop Nuwara Eliya as a destination for local and foreign tourists with the aim of developing Sri Lanka as one of the best tourism countries in the world,” Urban Development and Housing Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said.
The Minister has directed the Urban Development Authority (UDA) to expedite development activities in Nuwara Eliya to attract more foreign tourists.
The programme will be implemented under the theme of ‘Development of Nuwara Eliya for the Future’. Under this programme, the Nuwara Eliya Old Race Course, Lake Gregory and other tourist attractions in Nuwara Eliya will be developed as best tourist attractions.
The Lake Gregory development will be carried out in five phases. Accordingly, new car parks, motorcar racing tracks and a new hot water pool will be built near Lake Gregory.
Under this proposed development project, the old racecourse will be developed in accordance with international standards.
A new horse race track, a carnival complex, horse parking lots and a chain of restaurants will be built. A cable car project will also be initiated.
Minister Ranatunga said that new cable car project will be run between Nanu Oya and Nuwara Eliya giving fresh experience to tourists
It is also expected to develop Pundaluoya, Nanuoya, Ginigathhena, Walapane, Rikillagaskada, Pusasellawa and Kitulgala under this development plan.
The Minister said that basic facilities and essential infrastructure will also be developed while development of electricity, post office and other related services and planting of eco-friendly trees will also be carried out, the Minister said.
