The Kalmunai GCE Ordinary Level Examination paper marking centres were closed yesterday (22) due to the fuel scarcity that prevails in the country.

The decision was arrived at following a discussion held between teachers’ trade unions and the Education Minister on Tuesday (21).

The teachers who engage in paper marking took part in protests islandwide for the past few days urging the Government to provide fuel for their vehicles to reach the evaluation centres on time and do the task successfully. Although, the examiners were issued with passes to get fuel from fuel stations for their vehicles, they were badly treated by the public and the filling station owners, the examiners told the Daily News.

Considering the plight faced by the examiners since June 17, the Commissioner of Examinations has instructed all the relevant authorities to close the evaluation centres for two days from yesterday. The Government has instructed all the fuel stations to give priority to the examiners in supplying fuel.
