The most awaited franchise cricket tournament in Sri Lanka T-20 Lanka Premier League (LPL) player draft is scheduled to be held today. A total of 353 players, consisting of 180 overseas and 173 Sri Lankan players (First Class, Internationals, and Ex-Internationals) will feature in the upcoming ‘Draft,’ which will be held virtually today 5 pm, with the participation of the LPL Governance Committee, and the Franchise Owners ( Management and Coaches).
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has appointed a new LPL tournament Director Samantha Dodanwela who is the Chairman of the SLC tournament Committee. Last two editions were successfully conducted by former Tournament Director and Vice President of the SLC Ravin Wickramaratne and his team while several top cricketers from India, Pakistan, England, South Africa, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Ireland and Afghanistan took part at this tournament with Sri Lankan players.
The draft will consist of 20 rounds, covering several player categories, such as ‘International Ruby', ‘International Sapphire,’ ‘International Diamond ‘A,’ and ‘B,’ and International Platinum.
Meanwhile there will be a Sri Lanka ‘Gold Round’ focusing on selecting Sri Lanka’s young talent, below U23, with two players each for a team.A squad will consist of 20 players, with 14 Sri Lankans and 6 overseas players.If necessary, a team can retain 6 players, consisting of 4 Sri Lankans and 2 Overseas from the previous year’s squad.Last two edition of the LPL Jaffna team led by Thisara Perera won the championship.The 3rd edition of the LPL is more important for the National players who are expected to take part in the ICC T-20 world cup which is scheduled to be commenced from October 16th in Australia. Sri Lankan white ball cricketers have a busy schedule from LPL to Asia Cup and then straight to T-20 world cup in Australia
Franchisees also can Direct Sign (Pre-Draft) 2 Sri Lankan and 2 internationals, while the rest of the players have to be picked from the upcoming ‘Player Draft'.The tournament will be kicked off on the July 31 and will be played at the R.Premadasa International Cricket Stadium Colombo, and the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium, Hambantota.
