Indika hopes to win a medal at Commonwealth Games

Indika Chaturanga - talented Weightlifter

Thirty three year old, Indika Chaturanga Dissanayake, an Old Boy of Kingswood College, Kandy is a talented Weightlifter who started the sport at his earlier school Menikdiwela National School and joined Kingswood College to improve his studies as well as weightlifting.

He has been selected to lead the Sri Lanka Contingent for the fourth Commonwealth Games scheduled to be held from 28th July to 8th August,2022 at Birmingham,UK. From 2015 onwards he was coached by R.B.Wickremasinghe assisted by Navinda Dayan and he has been employed at Sri Lanka Navy since the year 2009.

He will be participating at the Fourth Commonwealth Games and before that he has participated at Commonwealth Games held in India in 2010 and was placed 6th in 62 Kg weight class, in 2014 at the Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow, Scotland he was unsuccessful but in 2018 he won a Silver Medal at the Commonwealth Games held in Gold Coast, Australia in the 69 Kg. weight class lifting a full total of 297 Kgs. At the local tournaments he has won his weight class from the year 2007 to 2019 and he has been the ‘Best Lifter’ consequently for five years from 2011 to 2016 at the National Weightlifting contests.

As a student of Kingswood College, he has won the ‘Best Sportsman’ award for all sports for the year 2009 and he has won a Platinum Award for the same at the National Sports Festival organised by the ‘Sirasa’. He has won the Presidential Sports Colours for weightlifting in the year 2016 and at present Indika is training hard at the Kandy Municipal Weightlifting Training Centre at Mahaiyawa,Kandy for the Commonwealth Games.
