Fulfill people’s expectations within democratic framework - Chief Prelates

The country will become anarchic, through arbitrary power struggles, the Mahanayake Theras of the Three Chapters issuing a statement said yesterday (14).

They said that the people’s expectations should be fulfilled within the democratic framework and efforts should be made to establish peace in the country immediately.

The statement was issued under the signatures of the Mahanayake Thera’s the Most Ven. Thibbattuwave Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Mahanayake of the Malwatu Chapter, the Most Reverend Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana Thera of the Asgiriya Chapter, Most Ven.Dodampahala Chandrasiri Thera of the Sri Lanka Amarapura Mahanikaya and the Most Ven. Makulewe Wimala Thera of the Sri Lanka Ramanna Maha Nikaya.

The statement said: “Due to the political instability created in the country, the security of the country as well as public lives are under severe threat. Without a proper plan to protect people’s lives and solve people’s problems, arbitrary power struggles will lead to further anarchy in the country.”

“Therefore, at this critical moment, we emphasise the need to focus on the democratic expectations and call the parliament together with all the party leaders in the democratic structure and build a formal government in such a way that the image of the country is not harmed internationally.” it said.

“And in this critical moment, the protesting public should also act responsibly and intelligently not to engage in any action that damages public property, except to peacefully protest and respect the rule of law in accordance with the law of the country.” Mahanayaka Theras said.

“Also, since it is the right of the public to be aware of the real situation in the country, we believe that it is the duty and responsibility of the security forces to maintain the peace of the country by allowing free reporting of information and protecting people’s lives.” the Mahanayaka Theras stressed.
