Eight individuals who have been charged with being members of an unlawful assembly at the road leading to the Colombo Fort Magistrate's Court on May 25, and for obstructing the duties of Police officers were released on personal bail by Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage yesterday.
The eight individuals include, Rev. Sathyawel, Damitha Abeyratne, Rathindu Senaratne alias Ratta, Jagath Manuwarna, and Joseph Starlin.
The Slave Island Police informed the Magistrate that the suspects were among those who had unlawful assembled at the road leading to the Fort Magistrate's Court on May 25, and obstructed the duties of the police officers and attacked a prisons bus.
The President’s Counsel Upul Jayasuriya appearing on behalf of the suspects informed the Magistrate that the case was filed by the police in a fraudulent manner. The President's Counsel Jayasuriya further stated that steps will be taken to file a private lawsuit regarding the filing of false charges against the people who engaged in the peaceful protest. He further pointed out that the police is acting biased by filing B reports fraudulently and requested the Magistrate to take proper action in this regard.
After considering the facts, the Magistrate released the suspects on personal bail and ordered the case to be called again on November 29.
The Magistrate ordered them to visit Slave Island Police today (10) and give statements.
