Minister calls for quick disposal of labour disputes

Labour Minister Manusha Nanayakkara has decided to conduct an immediate investigation regarding the unwarranted delays being caused in solving Labour disputes and call for explanation for the delays from the relevant officials.

The Minister reached the decision after conducting a Zoom discussion with District Labour Office staff to discuss measures to resolve outstanding labour disputes. It was revealed at the discussion that from January 1, 2022 to July 31, 2022, there were 9,585 unsolved labour disputes. There were 10,596 unsolved disputes to be settled between January 1, 2022 and June 31,2022, of which 5,946 disputes have been settled.

The Labour Minister expressed his displeasure over the very unsatisfactory situation at the Zoom meeting, instructed that on the importance of avoiding unnecessary and unwarranted delays when settling Labour disputes.

Minister Nanayakkara also focused special attention on the report of the Special Envoy of the UN's Human Rights Council when addressing issues regarding the delays when settling Labour disputes and instructed Ministry officials to implement the recommendations of the said report immediately.
