‘Individual efforts can overcome present crisis’

Government employees, the Tri Forces and Police should serve the public without any ethnic, language, religious, social or political prejudices, said Sri Lanka Peace Council Project Director Saman Seneviratne.

He was speaking at a workshop conducted in Batticaloa and organized by the Batticaloa District Inter-Religious Committee (DIRC) and presided over by President R. Manogaran, on Tuesday (30).

Seneviratne said that if national reconciliation is to be achieved, a change of heart should be cultivated in the people. Politicians too should respect democratic traditions.

He said that with individual efforts the present economic and political crises can be overcome. In order to achieve this, their organization is visiting the districts and encouraging the people to increase the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) through self-employment projects as well as home gardens that will make them self-sufficient. They are facilitating these projects by supplying the necessary inputs.

“We are encouraging people in Batticaloa, Vavuniya, Puttalam, Polonnaruwa and Kegalle to cultivate home gardens. The respective divisional secretaries have selected 200 families each and provided every family with 10 kgs of organic manure and seeds,” Seneviratne said.
