Student dies after falling into overflowing drain

A 14-year-old student from a school in Kurunegala town died yesterday afternoon after falling into a drain which was overflowing due to heavy rain.

He had died after being admitted to the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital. The deceased has been identified as Sajitha Gunaratne, a ninth grade student.

He was on his way home from school when he fell into the drain during the heavy rains yesterday.

He had got stuck in the drain and people who were nearby had removed the top concrete blocks covering the drain to save the child. However, the student had died after being admitted to the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital.
