The water cutting ceremony of the historic Sumana Saman Devala Perahera of Ratnapura was held yesterday (11) morning near Ratambala Falls of the Kalu Ganga.
This year (2022) the 797th procession of Ratnapura’s historical Sumana Saman Devalaya ended yesterday with the water cutting ceremony.
The final Randoli Perahera of the Sumana Saman Devala Perahera festival was held on Saturday (10) night. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic situation, the Saman Devala Perahera was held without public participation for a few years. However this year (2022) the procession was held with public participation. There was a high turnout for the Perahera festival as well as the water cutting festival held yesterday.
The ritual of water cutting ceremony started yesterday at around 4.00 am from the Sumana Saman Devala premises.
The water-cutting procession travelled about five km from the Devala premises to the Ratambala Falls carrying the Dewabharana.
Basnayake Nilame Migara Jayasundara says that this is the longest water cutting river procession held in Sri Lanka.
The Esala Perahera came to an end on returning to Sumana Saman Dewalaya from Kotambe.
The procession is called Dawal Perahera as it held during daytime. Chief Incumbent of Sri Padasthanaya Ven. Bengamuwe Dhammadinna Nahimi Thera, Diyawadana Nilame Nilanga Dela, Basnayake Nilame Migara Jayasundara, Minister Vidura Wickramanayaka, Defence Secretary General Kamal Gunaratne, Ratnapura District Secretary Malani Lokupothagama, Gemunu Hewa Balakaya Sena Vidhayaka Brigadier W.B.J.K. Wimalaratne and many others participated in the ceremony.
