Notice issued on former President Maithripala over Easter Sunday attacks

Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage yesterday issued notice on former President Maithripala Sirisena to appear before Court on October 14 over a private complaint pertaining to Easter Sunday attacks.

Rev. Fr. Cyril Gamini Fernando and Jesuraj Ganeshan, a victim of Easter Sunday attacks, had filed a private plaint urging them to take legal action against the former President under Section 298 of Penal Code for causing death by negligence. Former President Maithripala Sirisena has been named as a suspect in this case. The Court concluded that the former President had neglected to fulfill his responsibilities and decided that he had committed an offense under sections of the Penal Code.

President’s Counsel Rienzie Arsacularathne appearing on behalf of the complainant stated that the Presidential Commission appointed to investigate the Easter Sunday attacks had recommended taking necessary legal action against him under the Penal Code. However, the Attorney General had not taken any action pertaining to the recommendations given by the Presidential Commission.
