The staff of Chilaw Hospital managed to save the baby and the mother by performing a caesarean operation while giving Cardiopulmonary Resusciation (CRP) for two hours to a pregnant mother with heart failure.
This mother was in very critical condition and her baby was thirty-two weeks pregnant. This mother has been transferred to the Chilaw General Hospital from the Galmuruwa Peripheral Hospital at around 11.25 pm on Tuesday.
She had been admitted to the operation theatre immediately after consulting Gynaecologist and Obstetrician Dr.Gayan De Silva. However, her heart had failed to function as the doctors started performing the caesarian operation.
Doctors had then begun giving her CRP while performing the caesarian operation to save the child. It took about two hours for the mother’s heart to return to normal, and until then, the mother was continuously resuscitated. Dr.de Silva said that he had never had such an experience in his 25 years of medical life.
