Sri Lanka Army honoured the players who won the Asia Cup from Cricket and Netball recently. The member of Sri Lanka’s Asia Cup winning cricket team Maheesh Theekshana was promoted by the Sri Lanka Army at a reception held at the Commander’s office at Army headquarters last Tuesday to honour Army-groomed sportsmen and sportswomen who had shone in the field of international sports.
Maheesh Theekshana the mystery spinner who was a Private in the Army was elevated to the rank of Sergeant after the Asia Cup cricket victory. The 23-year-old former St. Benedict’s cricketer later joined the Army and is playing cricket for the Army SC. He is an active member of the Sri Lankan white ball format having more experience in franchise cricket like IPL and LPL. He was named in the forthcoming T20 World Cup squad.
Meanwhile, the members of the Sri Lanka netball team that won the Asian Championships were promoted to Private Thisala Algama, to the rank of Corporal, Private Bhashini de Silva to the rank of Corporal, and Private Idusha Janani. Perera to the rank of Corporal and Bronze medallist at the Asian Bodybuilding Championship 2022, Corporal R.A.D.P. Rajapaksha to the rank of Lance Corporal.
Earlier, Sri Lanka Army also promoted South Asian fastest runner and the Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Yupun Abeykoon for his recent performances in the sprint events. In addition, Para-athlete Palitha Bandara and two Paralympics medalists Dinesh Priyantha Herath and Samitha Dulan also promoted by the Sri Lanka Army under the blessings of former Army Commander General Shavendra Silva.
Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage, Commander of the Army after meeting the sports stars who brought fame to the country and the Army alike commended their achievements and talked to each one of them in the presence of the Director of Sports of the Army.
The Commander of the Army, appreciative of their international achievements awarded financial incentives to Sergeant Maheesh Theekshana, the netball team members and bodybuilder Lance Corporal R.A.D.P. Rajapaksha and extended his best wishes for their future. Sri Lanka Army is the leading place to give opportunities for the athletes to get employment and give all the facilities to continue their respective sports
Major General W.A.S.S. Wanasinghe RSP USP Commander, Security Forces Mullaitivu, Major General W.B.S.M. Abeysekera RSP USP, Director General Financial Management, and Brigadier K.A.W.N.H. Bandaranayake USP, Director, Army Sports were also present on the occasion.
